Conversion of a winery
Together with the church and the building at Torkelweg 2, the building at Torkelweg 4, which was originally used as a winery and later as a carpenter’s workshop, forms a striking, old ensemble of buildings at the foot of the Röthis vineyard. The houses form a small village square in front of the former Torkel inn, which was demolished during the planning phase and replaced by a small residential complex. The village square was incorporated into the exterior design of the apartment building. Our Torkel was able to retain its original face towards the square and, despite the radical redesign, gives it a sense of stability and remembrance.
The design envisions living on multiple levels — both within the house and in the adjacent outdoor spaces. The upper garden and the lower forecourt are connected by an external spiral staircase.
The original shape of the building, as well as elements such as windows, gates, and flooring, have been preserved, restored, and thoughtfully integrated into the new design concept. They form the basis for the selection of newly introduced materials.
The former workshop space has been transformed into an open-plan living, cooking, and dining area. This space opens upward into the roof volume, revealing the original wooden structure, which now lends character to the interior. The bedrooms and family bathroom are located beneath the roof. Carefully placed skylights create additional headroom and bring generous natural light into the space. The open void above the living area also allows light to enter from above, enhancing the bright and spacious atmosphere.
